About the Grimmett Club

The Grimmett Club is a club run by its members for its members, and serves two primary roles:

  • Build our network through a formalised, inclusive club for all past players, volunteers & supporters of the Prahran Cricket Club – connecting the people & history of the club to the current playing group through various events throughout the year.

  • Supporting the Prahran Cricket Club in achieving its vision as 'the club of choice in Premier Cricket' by raising funds for equipment, facilities & services through membership activities.

Examples include items such as perpetual trophies, trophy cabinets, cricket equipment (i.e. new nets or resurfacing synthetic pitches), clubroom furniture & furnishings, pitch covers, and other capital works such as updating honour boards and restoring club memorabilia.

We do not exist to supply cricket balls, coaching equipment or fund the recruitment of professional players.

Although the primary objective is dedicated to the prosperity of the Prahran Cricket Club, the group also aims to assist local charities, organisations and persons within the wider club community when the means and needs arise.

About Clarrie Grimmett

Clarence “Clarrie” Victor Grimmett (December 25, 1891 – May 2, 1980) was widely considered to be one of the finest spin bowlers ever to play the game, and is credited as the pioneer of the ‘flipper’.

Born in New Zealand, he played club cricket in Wellington and made his first-class debut for Wellington at the age of 17.

In 1914, he moved to Australia and played club cricket in Sydney for 3 seasons. Marrying a Victorian woman, they moved to Melbourne – where Grimmett joined the Prahran Cricket Club. Awarded 1st XI cap #111, Grimmett's brief stay at Toorak Park (1920/21 – 1923/24) was extremely productive, claiming 228 wickets @ 12.93 – including 35 5-wicket hauls, and 10 wickets in a match an amazing five times.

Grimmett went on to play First Class cricket for Victoria, and in 1923 moved to South Australia in pursuit of a Test career for Australia. He claimed a total of 1,424 first-class wickets at 22 a piece.
